It is standard these days to use a readily available 1 1/8 in stem with shim to 1". Some stems come with the shim, or you can buy them on ebay or Amazon all over the place. Some are no name, I even have a Thomson brand.
AFAIK they all work great. This is not a half-a$$ed setup. It is the real deal.
Thanks rpenmanparker! I've also been on the fence about upgrading my 80's steel Allez. While I love the "vintage" idea of the bike, it would be nice to modernize it with a carbon fork, cockpit, 10speeds, a new wheelset and get that much more out of riding it.
