I think it's more of a "riding your bike and not worrying about it" is cool. I doubt anyone would say you shouldn't take care of your equipment, but a bike will get scratches through the course of normal use, there's no sense in getting too wound up over it.
tl;dr - Take care if it, but don't freak out over normal wear and tear.

I actually have an old MTB that had a seized seatpost when I got it. Same deal; it's at the perfect height for me with a Brooks mounted. I should put a QR seatpost binder bolt on it and lock it up downtown just to **** with thieves lol
