I would throw out using a simple friction thumb shifter...eithe the cheapy sunrace or look for vintage suntour.

I use the sunrace with a 1x8 set up and really like it. The combination of friction with modern tooth design of the freehub cogs it really smooth. Shifting takes no effort... just nudge the shifter a bit.

No reaching down, clean look, great functionality
