if you wipe the stanchions down after every ride and then pay close attention to the fork's action, you should be able to extend the service life a bit and tell when it's time to do the maintenance.

I'd suggest doing the work as scheduled to begin with and then see how things look by the 2nd interval. if the oil is darkened, it's getting contaminated. if things look good, try extending the interval.
