Thanks Elvo. I changed the route so we'll backtrack on Portola. As for avoiding Turtle Ridge - I agree with you and I've changed that part too. The traffic light is slow and annoying. But Turtle Ridge cuts about a mile compared to going all the way to the bottom of NPC, so for those of us who might get dropped, I reckon it's still a good shortcut.
As for Laguna Canyon - it's got a wide shoulder after the CA-73 so I wouldn't worry too much about it. But we must be careful when making that left turn at the end. Maybe just do the "sissy turn", i.e. cross Pavona and then use the pedestrian crossing.
