I wasn't party to that conversation (and frankly I"m getting it third hand since he had his LBS deal directly with Trek), so I really don't know those details.
But what I
do know is that on the day of the incident he certainly was not involved in a crash.
While I didn't see the incident (because I was in front of him) I shortly circled back and heard the whole story.
