OK, I found the post I was talking about - I did not upload the spreadsheet after all, but just posted the formula in spreadsheet form.

This is the correct formula. RISE is in feet, DISTANCE is in miles.

%GRADE = TAN(ASIN(RISE/(5280*DISTANCE)))*100

Put it into a spreadsheet for future use.
