Yup. I don't bother with waterproof shoes. Wool socks work great for me because they allow my feet to cool when they get hot or sweaty. Sometimes I even ride with SPD sandals in the winter.

When it gets very cold, I can ride with my SPD sandals and my neoprene socks. Those socks are very warm, but they do not breathe. My feet end up being very wet from sweat, but that's a price worth paying when it's very cold outside.

If you're shopping for shoes for winter, buy them a size large. It will leave room for two pairs of socks or a pair of thick socks.
