I regularly ride on that road with my bike club. It's a popular road with cyclists because it connects to one end of the Upper Charles Trail bike path. There are absolutely no safety facilities or any kind of cycling infrastructure on the road. There's a fog line that's maybe a foot or two from the road's edge. Cars regularly whiz by at 50 mph.
To turn into the bike path parking area while traveling southbound on Route 85 requires a dangerous left turn across high speed oncoming traffic with limited site lines. It's a great bike path with all kinds of great scenery but the lack of safety features on the main access road is nothing short of negligent design.
I recently tried to get my town, which abuts the town this accident happened in, to appoint a bike committee to work on bike safety issues. I was told they are "too busy" with other business. How many more must die before they make bike safety a priority? We'll form our own bike committee with or without the town's approval but it will be a much more tedious process to get the approvals and the funding we'll require.
