As has been said, the research shows that you don't generate power pulling up on the pedals, at best you're unweighting them.

I rarely consciously think about my pedal stroke.

Rather than trying to think about how to pedal, you can do drills to improve your pedal stroke: One legged drills, pedal with one leg only for 30-60 seconds, repeat with each leg 5 times; fast pedal drills, low gear, 120 rpm, work up until you can do 3 sets of 10 minutes.

If you can do both of those drills smoothly you don't need to worry about how your pedaling.
