I have a hard time understanding the fear and hatred of triple chainrings. I have two bikes with triples and almost never use the small rings but I'm happy they are there and on those casual rides with steep climbs I can either use them or grunt my way up with the secure knowledge that they are there just in case. I also have a bike with a 50/36 compact double and a 12-27 cassette. I rarely use the 27 tooth cog but I'm glad it is there. I have more confidence on the triples, though, and don't think about the hills before I start a ride. Why not have a really broad range of gears? A few ounces for a small chainring and a longer cage on the rear DR? Maybe for pro racers. Bah!
