I've been having patellar (kneecap and below the kneecap) pain for years. I'm trying to isolate the problem. On one hand, both knees are reconstructed '94 and '98. I also play lots of soccer. And, I road bike. My knees are always sore. So, I took the last month off from everything to see what is the main trigger. Got on the bike for a 15 mile, easy pace, ride on Wednesday, knee pain since. BTW, I don't mash. I know that can be a primary cause. Since the bike ride was the only physical activity I've recently partaken in, I'm going to assume it's pedal/seat position.
I had a professional fit done about a year ago and that didn't seem to help. Matter of fact, I kind of felt more awkward afterwords as far as comfort.
For me, and it may be different for you, when I have pain as you describe, it generally means my seat has slipped lower. Raising it has always solved the problem for me.
