This may have changed in the 1980s, but the easy way to distinguish a French-built bike from an Asian one was to measure the seat tube OD (28.0mm French, 28.6 most other Euopean, and anything from Asia or US) or to identify the BB threading (35x1 French and Swiss, 36x24 Italian, 1.375x24 almost everyone else).
