Mashing high gears on a short commute

Since moving house, my daily commute has gone from 25km return over hills to 8km return dead flat. To compensate, I've started trying to ride "harder" - mostly standing up, pushing a high gear.

Is this a good idea? I'm hoping it will build up some quad strength before I get into serious summer training in the next month or two. Any likely downsides?
