After first getting the major gunk of a chain, putting it in an ultrasonic cleaner if you have one is a great idea. Do NOT worry about getting the chain "too clean". If you use a high quality oil, capillary action will take the oil fully into all the rollers and pins on the chain. Just oil each link and spin the chain backward for a minute or so. Then wipe off the excess.
