I think that in some series finales, the writers make it bad on purpose. It's kind of an Andy Kaufmann joke. The audience gets so emotionally involved that the writer just steps on at the end and says, "You know this is all just stuff I made up, right? There is no greater, deeper message. It's just entertainment."

MASH was a good finale. Newhart was ok. Most are just garbage, though. I'm still scratching my head as to whether I liked the last Sopranos or not.
