So, I'm feeling a little crazy and have a unique need, so want to pass an idea around to y'all.
I have a road bike, very much a road-road bike with 25mm clearances and race-geometry (Lynskey Cooper BB30 competition). I recently got signed up to do the bulk moving for the NPO I work with, and we're a bike powered operation. The road bike with a 2-wheel trailer is totally fine for the pretty short (5km) in-town moves. But winter is coming (Montreal), and this will continue through the snow. So I had a maybe crazy idea...
What if I just swapped out the rear 700c (622mm) wheel for a 650B (584mm) wheel? My front wheel would stay at 700c, since my ENVE fork can squeeze a 700x28c Kenda Karvs tire in.
Advantages:
-It would only drop the rear end by 19mm (less if you factor in using a beefier tire), and a long reach brake could handle this change.
-The bottom bracket would go down maybe half that (since only the rear is dropping), which in theory should make it stabler to ride, without being too low for pedal-strike issues. There's a 7cm BB drop on the frame.
-It would effectively slacken the headtube angle by maybe a 0.50-0.75 degree also, also adding to a more straight-steering comfortable control.
-There are plenty of 650b winter-friendly tires available.
Disadvantages:
-650b with rim brake is pretty much only Velocity Synergy, but whatever, solid company.
-Bike will look funny, but whatever, I'm essentially a mummy in the winter anyways.
-???
Crazy, or do y'all think this is a solid idea?
