Utter nonsense. What, precisely, is "pretentious" about wearing cycling clothing/shoes etc. (I assume you mean jerseys, shorts, etc. that are not masquerading as something other than dedicated cycling clothing) when cycling?
Strikes me that doing so is in fact far less 'pretentious' than paying over the odds for stuff that works well on the bike but doesn't 'look' like cycling kit.
