Noob here, but I do climb a lot... Hoods for me if standing, generally with crotch of thumb/forefinger up on the top of the hoods. I often pull up when standing. If sitting and climbing my hands are often just resting lightly on top of the bars.
It rests the "heels" of my hands, which get numb on the flats unless I'm über-conscious of switching up hand positions. And it feels good to work the arms a bit when standing.
