Is it good bang for your buck? Probably not. The parts will work but not as well as higher specs. They will work for a long time but won't be as smooth, the bike won't be very light, etc. People can ride worse bikes for a long time. I say go for it. Get your start into the cycling world and if all goes well, you can buy a nicer bike.
As others have said, buying used is a good idea too. For me, I could never find a used bike in my size in my area so I was forced to go with BD. If you're an average size, buying used would be way better but will require more research etc.
