But the chain was unable to move after that. That's not normal

So, the old chain and chain ring wore together, metal wears, the chain stretched the chain ring developed sharper teeth with bigger rounder spaces between the teeth, rear gears also. The new chain, well, if you had watched the way the new chain fit on the chain ring you would have seen that they were compatible but the chain wasn't really laying on the chain wheel evenly, as to the reason it came off and caused injury, the chain was actually shifting properly, it wasn't sluggish like the old one, it shifted, I think it shifted more then you thought
