I train on super durable wheels a mechanic friend built up for me: campy chorus hubs (10sp) with mavic open pro rims. I don't remember the spoke count but it was pretty high.
I'm a little small for a disc (125lbs) so I just picked up a pair of tubular 404s from a former pro cyclist who only used them a couple times. It was a smoking deal ($550 w/ less than 200mi) and I'm testing them out tomorrow at Long Beach....my first set of race wheels. I kinda wanted them to be legal everywhere too. I was using a Hed deep dish front and specialized trispoke carbon rear. The 404s are certainly lighter.
Yep, I'm pretty sure the zipp dimples are BS (I did take fluid mechanics as an engineering student).
