Wheel building - I've signed up for the class - what do I do now?
I was interested in adding wheel building to my skill set, and lo and behold a local bicycle-advocacy organization ***-bike shop is running a class that I just signed up for.
The cost of the class includes "a set of CR18 rims, new spokes and nipples, and shimano tiagra hubs, the rear hub having a 7 speed cassette. The wheels can be customized for size and use (i.e. single speed or track hubs), though depending on your needs this may add to the expense of the class".
I only have one bike at the moment, a Specialized Secteur, so the obvious thing to do is to build a set for that bike, substituting a 10-speed cassette for the 7-speed. I'm too ignorant to know what a "CR18" rim is, so I don't know if I'm going to be improving my bike in the process, or just learning how to build the wheels.
I do have a hope of building a bike in the not-too-distant future, and am keeping my eyes open for a suitable frame (it's to be a more pedestrian commuter/touring bike), and my thinking was to build it first as a fixie just fer fun and to keep the initial component cost low, so these wheels could be intended for that project instead.
I'd appreciate any thoughts or advice.
Thanks.
