"All the gear"? It's a pair of shoes. As long as you go with recessed cleat shoes, you can still walk normally (and look pretty normal too depending on your shoe choice).

It's a single sided pedal but with SPD or platform as the options. To me that, that's inconvenient for either shoe option.
