Beer nomenclature means dick-all these days, that's how.
It's an ale and it's hoppy and IPA's sell very well, so it makes sense that they'd call it that. More honest folks call these sorts of beers India Dark Ale, India Black Ale, Cascadian Dark Ale and probably a thousand others (hey, why not needlessly throw Imperial in there, too?), but IPA is recognizable even by non-snobs.
Maybe i need to read Beer Snobery 101...LOL.. Thanks... I drink Mild traditional American beer, About the most off i go is Fat Tire or Yuengling.. I tried all kinds over the years living in Canada and now down here, Our company owns a Brewery

Never developped a taste for the stronger tasting stuff, probably never will...
