A dedicated SPD pedal has two usable sides to clip into (Crank Brothers have four, and even road-only pedals like Speedplays have two). That's a huge plus for commuting where you generally have to stop more frequently than a planned recreational ride where you can avoid roads that require much stopping. A dedicated platform also has two sides so no matter where the pedal falls, your foot ends up on the good side. Having to stop pedaling and flip the pedal over is an annoyance that I'll gladly avoid.
