I use a Shimano pedal having a platform on one side and SPD on the other. I forget the model number (pd324? ) but is the best of both worlds. The only negative is the weight due to a steel outer cage. I removed that outer steel cage so now its a smaller platform but yet considering making a replacement in aluminum.

For shoes, screw the roadie type. I primarily wear a pair of vintage Vittoria SPD sole mountain bike shoe. Has a nice non-slip deep lugged sole for walking and fairly light weight.
