I'm really a believer in the LBS route. You can't go wrong with having some support and service with a new bike.
Also, you're asking if the ride is "racy," so you've kind of touched on the advantage of going to a bike shop, i.e., you're able to test ride the bike you're buying. You can also get a better fit.
I can fit on some 58's, but I am now on a 56. It really depends on frame geometry.
Not trying to clutter-up your buying decision, but it's something to consider.

Just making sure you are aware that Performance and Nashbar are under the same corporate umbrella. Same ownership, that is. Yes, Performance offers LBS convenience, but the return policies are the same.
