Agree with this, for the most part. I'll go on the occasional competitive ride but I'll enjoy a 3 hour solo ride just as much.

If a guy wants to overtrain to reach the top, so be it, but there is a cost. I did that for several other hobbies, the big one coming to mind is 9 Ball (Billiards) and the day I finally won the weekly tournament I entered for 3 years straight my interest dropped like a rock and I quit overnight. I hope that never happens in cycling.
