I bet there are other CX (or road) bikes that will perform better commuting duties, if that's an important part of your requirements.
actually there are eyelets, something I looked for on the bike when I saw it at the LBS, it is not molded/welded onto the frame but is attached at the location where rim brakes would be, just not shown on the bmc website pics, believe me I have seen it first hand. there are eyelets machined into the frame down near the skewer for the lower rack mounts as well.
right now i'm using my GT GTR2 as a "commuter" and carrying everything on my back for the ride (about 9-10mi each way). I've been itching for a new bike this spring anyway and my riding cohort has started commuting down a longer route that takes him down a cinder path for about 10mi and another couple on the road to the office extending the commute to about 14-15mi. on the 9mi commute my backpack suffices, I haven't made the long commute yet but I can totally see how back pain would be increased carrying my laptop and accessories for work and my backpack would be a good bit heavier with the longer ride, so yes, a rack/panniers is on the agenda as is winter riding next year (I managed to injure my foot and will be doing indoor training to rehab during the off-season). budgetary constraints will keep me from having two bikes, which sux.
one thing I do like about the BMC is that it is a "comfort" bike geometry bike, which if I do decide to get a road bike I'll be looking at the synapse/roubaix/endurance style road bike this time around. some of the CX bikes i've looked at (caadx for instance) put your body in much racier position than some of the others, not a bad thing is 'cross racing is in the cards but its not for me. the Surly Disc Trucker with some cross tires might be a nice option for a commuter but I'm unsure how much i'd enjoy it on weekend rides with the guys, need to take that for an extended ride to try it out.
