Its been a rough few years so I only have one pair of road shoes (early 1990's), so the choice is with or without cleats(The shoes came with the choice of std cleats or spd cleats). I have chosen with in combination with loose straps. Not the same as being able to pull up but does give some extra range in applying force in the cycle (pulling back). When I get the hang of quick engagement like the younger days, I will tighten up the straps. Adding a rough surface is certainly worth investigating.
