The only way I see them catching you is if you're a repeat offender, & they stage a stake out.

Sounds like more of a scare tactic to me.
No plates on bikes. It might be a scare tactic but more likely, a response to someone that complains about bikes going too fast. It's a bit funny really because a couple years ago they put in rumble strips. But then a bunch of people complained about the rumble strips .. so those were removed within a couple months. My tax dollars at work! And I don't mind money being spent well, this is just stupid spending though.

I've emailed the trail authority asking what it's about but they didn't know either (but that they're going to look into it), so maybe it was put in by the Park Police which is suppose to monitor the trail.

Wash DC is generally pretty bike friendly but there are areas that lack common sense. The speed sign is a good example but even worse - when the "shutdown" happened, some of these idiots put a chain across the trail at the DC line, basically in completely nondescript place. I'd heard at least one person was injured when they didn't see it. I think eventually the chain was removed.

.. Anyway, sorry about the possibly OT response here. To bring it back to the original topic, I'm glad I ran into this thread. Somehow - maybe having kids and being out of touch a few years, I didn't know about STRAVA. Just joined Strava a few days ago. What a great resource. Especially now for me as I'm getting back into shape. I'm going to use the free version for awhile but am considering upgrading my account.
