You can always wear baggy shorts with chamois, but I fine them less comfortable and they tend to catch when I'm pedaling. I wear them if I plan to spend quite a bit of time off the bike in the middle of a ride around the general population. You certainly don't HAVE TO wear lycra, but it sure is a hell of a lot more comfortable provided you aren't overly self conscious.
