Someone posted this map a while back.

Almost all the roads were poor or fair back then. Not too many were good and I suspect those would have been quite poor by today's standards. Alot of the roads followed railroads were also marked fair but you couldn't ride on the rail bed which would have been a poor road in my opinion. I guess they had low standards of what a fair road was back then!
