Pricing: Depends on how bad you want or need them. There are alternatives. French thread is not as common.
Alternatives: Certainly. Stronglight is a likely choice. Just remember you are looking for French thread and make sure you get the correct spindle length.
Protruding threads: Assuming you were looking at a Campag BB, then that would be the Ti Super Record BB. Fits Campag Record crankarms.

I saw two French thread Campag BB sets for under $100.
