With $3000 to spend, I can't think of any good reason not to go full-suspension. With you coming from a road background and looking like you like grinding miles, my instinct says that you'll probably be more comfortable on an XC rocket with 100-120mm of travel or so front and back. Still depends on what kind of trails you ride though...I'm just guessing by most-likely-riding-style.
