I use a backpack only and here's why it works for me. My backpack is my laptop bag. If I used saddle bags I would still need a laptop bag which would mean transferring everyting with each leg of my commute. I commute 2X a week, so I can transport clothing, food, etc on my driving days. I tend to be somewhat of a minimalist...less is more.
