I think people look silly wearing anything other than a jersey and compression shorts on a road bike. Unless they're obviously commuting.
I wear a shirt and tie, slacks, and a sweater on cold days. I used to wear cycling clothes and change once I got to work, but the hassle ruined some of the joy I got from commuting. Plus, I don't sweat as much as I used to and it's only 5 miles. My students have never said anything (of course, I doubt they would).
