That seems to be the way to maximize your riding to get stuff done. I'd much rather have city blocks that give me more access to shops in a small area.
Grid is great, but I'm thinking nodes: Things (residential, small retail, light industry) are clustered together in walking-scale districts (nodes), and the nodes are linked by high speed transit plus bikeways.
I like thinking about the different patterns we can use to design our living spaces...concentric, linear, grid, nodular, etc.
