When Schwinn introduced them in the late 1930s all the New Worlds were equiped with rear facing or track dropouts. From what I understand, sometime in '40 or '41 Schwinn switched them to forward facing dropouts.

Dave, That is such a cool crankset. All it needs now is my wide range Suntour Perfect freewheel. I thought I had a picture but it is something like 16-20-24-28-32-38. Even then, your low would not be all that low.
You are correct! It had been awhile ago that I researched this frame, not many photos out there. Mine would date from '40 to '47, since it has a "J" serial number. Here's a link to more images.
