The other night I set out on my cannondale at about 5:30 pm. As usual I packed my cell phone in the special pocket I have attached to the crossbar just under the seat. I have a lot of very warm clothing for late fall riding including a pair of Brooks running mittens that are way warmer than any cycling gloves I have tried. I have ski socks that come all the way to the knee under the over boots I wear to keep my feet warm. It gets pitch dark, I'm grooving in cruise mode, I've turned on all my lights, I'm about twenty miles into a thirty loop when I hit a rock with both tires. First my rear tire deflates and then in about five minutes my front tire goes flaccid. I carry only one tube so I am stranded on the road. The temperature is 39 degrees. No problem! I reach into that special pocket, speed dial my wife, tell her where I am and in about 15 minutes she comes to rescue me. I have dim recollections of past experiences where I walked with socks on for miles in the dark because I had no way of contacting anyone to tell them I was in distress. Cell phones are a positive outcome of modern technology. They are a blessing.
