You have a point to a point. Let's assume I had two tubes. I would then have to change both tubes in the dark on the side of the road during rush hour. I am bundled up with layered clothing so my movement is limited and it is 39 degrees so my finger dexterity is attenuated. I am actually quite proficient at changing tubes under normal conditions but safety is an issue here. Granted, by carrying one tube I am playing the odds but those odds are good on only a thirty mile ride.
I've been there, with the added fact of a cold drizzle. Luckily, I was only a mile from home, so I opted for the walk of shame. In cleats. Changed the tube in a heated basement the next morning.
