Depending on where you are, and what kind of attitude the police have, it does sometimes get pursued.
There was an incident here in socal that made the papers a year or two ago, where a driver was harassing cyclists on the Angeles Crest. Multiple reports were called in, and the county sheriffs went and found the driver and arrested him. I don't have many close calls, but once when descending the back side of Glendora Mt. Road down here (two lane twisty mountain road, very low traffic) there was a convertible coming up with all four wheels over the yellow line. I ride far to the right, and he saw me in time to get over, but it was close. About a minute later a couple of deputies came up the same way on patrol. I stopped them, told them, and they set off after him. No idea if they found him, but it's fairly likely because most people park at an overlook about a couple miles up from where it happened. I've also seen a Forest Service LEO reading the riot act to some drivers in sports cars there ("If I see you on my mountain again I'll arrest every one of you").
Motorcyclists down here get a worse far rap than they deserve. They're loud and they often ride in big groups, but for the most part they ride fairly safely and pay attention, and the more experienced riders enforce reasonable behavior on the less experienced ones. Sports car drivers seem to have a lot less social enforcement of safe riding.
We also now have a 3 foot passing law that goes into effect soon. No idea what effect it will have- I suspect it's main value will be a straightforward vehicle code violation to note when drivers hit cyclists so that fault will be more likely assigned to the driver.
