Apparently I'm the only one who disagrees. I do carry a phone, because I'm in my 60s and my wife insists, but back in the day, a cyclist was expected to be able to fix the bike. I live near a national forest, and 10 years ago we used to ride mountain bikes 15 or 20 miles into the wilderness. I've dealt with broken derailleurs, broken spokes, tacoed wheels and a cracked frame, because there was no choice. I see people now calling for help when they have a flat tire on the road, between a convenience store and a gas station. Some of the people I ride with, men as well as women, are baffled by a puncture. They don't carry pumps or patch kits. Just reach for the phone. Takes some of the fun and romance out of cycling. The day I call for help with a flat tire, they can send a hearse.
