The New Jersey Turnpike was built with tolls to help the state pay the overall construction costs. It was said once the turnpike was paid off, the tolls booths would be removed. However, once all the loans were paid, they quickly realized it was going to cost tens of millions each year to pay of salaries and maintenance of the road. The idea of removing the tolls was quickly put away. Quite frankly, I'm glad they kept the tolls because the New Jersey Turmpike is quite expensive today due to the skyrocking cost of maintaining that super sturcture.
