this more or less, scares the **** out of me and I nearly fall everytime. I've gotten better at increasing my cadence to
avoid this. I'm just wondering, what would happen if I encounter the same problem while clipped in?
Would I definitely fall? Or would the momentum of the clipped in feet just keep my legs moving until it slows down due to
lack of pedaling?
Wow! that does sound scarey as ****. I'm on clipless now and have done high cadence downhills at 185ish rpm without feeling like i'm about to fall off. I would say at high cadence, the clipless will keep your feet in and you won't have the same out of control issue as you have with just platforms. Since your running brake's you have those to keep you at a cadence that feels comfy.
I'd second Coluber42's info. When I was commuting and on and off the bike during the day, clips and leather shoes were my preference. I don't commute as much anymore so no more on and off the bike during long rides === clipless.
