Bikes: Trek 520 total custom build, Cannondale Mountain Tandem, Oryx Mountain Bike

Do you need to have a plate for a kickstand? I was intending on putting on a ******** kickstand on my touring bike. But I dont have a plate-maybe I should braze one on before I paint the bike?
