I have done this too. You just run the left derailleur cable across the front of the head tube to the right stop and vice-versa. Then you cross the bare cables under the down tube on the way down to the bottom bracket to bring them back to their proper sides for feeding into the under BB guide. This method puts a little bow into the cable run at the head tube that keeps the cable away from the frame even when the front wheel is turned to the extreme left or right. It is especially helpful with older frames where the cable stops are at the old shifter position on the down tube.
