I'm surprised at how many American bikes are suggested, and I like the idea of an American frame. I missed the opportunity to score an Independent Fabrication Crown Jewel frame in my size, that would have been a great candidate for the group, although it's not the correct vintage. Being a locally made frame would have been a bonus.

It just so happens that I currently have the DA group hanging on a 1988 Trek 560, which was Trek's US-made, mid-range racing bike that year. A decent mass-produced lugged frame made of Tru-Temper DB tubes and investment-cast lugs, it rides great, is a pretty color (aqua) and fits me well (60x58 c-c, 73d parallel), but as my fleet is undergoing a round of refinement, the compulsive, impulsive and shallow part of me just feels like having something with more panache, more provenance... I feel like the DA group is too nice for the Trek's frame (frame was originally spec'd with Shimano 105), although functionally the whole bike does work very nicely with that group.

Beautiful! But too small...

Non-English threading is not a deal breaker for me... I just said preferred because I have the DA English headset and BB, but I can always part those out or swap for something with the needed threading...

Thanks for all the ideas so far, and keep them coming!
