Zombie thread! So much better than starting a new one. Trying to complete my first build with a complete group. 105 on a 92 Schwinn Japanamount. The fd clamp is smaller than it would like to be, and there is a small gap when it's fully(?) tightened. Would I be better off putting something on that fits better? I fear doing damage to the tube by over-tightening. I have derailleurs that fit better--just not 105.
As pointed out earlier, you don't need the clamp to be incredibly tight. On most clamp type fittings you typically want a small gap, so that you can sure its clamping the tube. As long as the clamp faces are parallel and not touching, you're fine mechanically. Just tighten it down until its reasonably snug.
